Vinyl Window Shopping Tips

When you embark on your shopping expedition for vinyl windows, keep these factors in mind as you visit the showroom.

Benefits of vinyl windows

Low-maintenance, available in numerous colours and designs and solidly built, vinyl windows seem like a simple, no-muss, no-fuss window option.

Additionally, vinyl windows offer other benefits too, such as:

  • Temperature comfort: Vinyl windows offer excellent year-round thermal performance
  • Energy efficiency: A powerful insulator, vinyl helps keep your energy bills down
  • Weatherproof: High-quality vinyl can stand up to tough weather, year-after-year

Vinyl windows make a great addition to your homeAlthough vinyl is an attractive choice – just like any home product – not all vinyl windows are created equal. It pays (in the short-term and long-term) to dig a little deeper when shopping for vinyl windows for your home.

How to choose top-quality construction

Best-in-class vinyl usually has additives included which protect it against damage caused by:

  • Brittleness
  • Yellowing or other discolouration
  • Fading

And take a close look at the corners of the vinyl window you’re interested in. If it’s made solidly, it should have welded corners for strength of shape.

Does the glass pass?

The glass is what keeps heat from escaping in the winter (or accumulating in the hot summer months). A good vinyl window will capture air between the panes on either side of the window.

And if the glass is coated properly (this is called low emissivity coating ), heat will be properly reflected (and can actually protect your furniture from fading due to heat exposure).

Look at the warranty

Some windows have a “double-lifetime” window warranty which covers two elements of the window:

  • Performance problems: Such as being unable to properly open and close the window
  • Appearance issues: Such as fading, cracking or warping

In some instances, these warranties can actually be transferred to the next homeowner.

Check its cleaning instructions

Yes, these windows are made to handle tough weather conditions, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you can high-pressure washer on it to clean the glass.

Doing so can break the glass insert outright, or damage seals and latches which won’t enable your window to close properly.

By familiarizing yourself with its cleaning instructions before you make a purchase decision, you’ll know exactly how much care you’ll need to invest to keep your vinyl window clean.

Is it in the colour you want?

Although vinyl can come in many colours, the style of window you want may not be available in the colour of your choice.

Premium vinyl windows, though, can usually be ordered or customized to match or contrast against the trim or doors of your home.

The amount of sunlight a house plant receives will play a major role in how well it does over time. If the plant is given too much light, the sun’s rays will burn the leaves. If it is given too little, the leaves will turn yellow, and the plant will eventually die. In fact, one mistake made frequently by amateur indoor gardeners is thinking that their plant with yellow leaves needs more water when what it really needs is more sunlight.

Old-fashioned doors may be beautiful, but the single-pane windows they use allow lots of air in and out of your home, meaning you can lose energy and money. Today’s doors use energy-efficient glass and state-of-the-art installation techniques to make sure your inserts keep energy loss at bay. In addition to traditional glazing points, inserts are securely installed using special adhesives designed to hold the glass in place without letting moisture in. Adhesives are also developed to withstand direct sunlight and freeze-and-thaw cycles to ensure a tight, secure fit in all seasons.
