Before making a decision about window installation, consider replacing an existing style with a bay or bow style. Installing a bay or bow window adds space and light to a room and makes the space feel more open.
Bay and bow windows are very similar in appearance. A bay has three panels, usually with a fixed center pane and one casement on either side, giving it a more angular look. A bow has four (or more) panes, with two fixed center panes and two (or more) casements, which make it look more rounded.
When replacing a window, consider energy efficiency and endurance. Installing a model with glass panes that are treated with a reflective substance reduces the UV rays that pass into the house. This low emissivity, or low-e, glass is highly energy efficient, because it reduces heat transfer. It also protects furniture from UV damage.
Aluminum casing lasts a long time, but transfers a great deal of heat. Wood is much less conductive (up to 1000 times less) but suffers from weather damage. A reasonable compromise between the two is to install vinyl-clad frames. Vinyl lasts longer than wood, but not as long as aluminum. The heat transfer involved in vinyl-clad frames is significantly less than with aluminum but more than wood. Vinyl also requires very little maintenance to remain attractive.
