Mississauga Home Window Installation

Home windows installed before the Energy Star program started in 1992 may not be very energy efficient.

Home Window Installation

When looking for energy-efficient home window replacements, consider these important elements:

  • Glazing. Double glazing means there are two panes of glass in each section, separated by a pocket of air. Triple glazing means there are three panes of glass. The additional panes add insulation against heat transfer and sound. In Southern Ontario, installing double-glaze styles in the home is generally sufficient. Northern Ontario residents may find triple-glazing more necessary.
  • Gas fill and low-e coating. Injecting a gas into the airtight space between panes adds another level of insulation and protection from both temperature and sound. Argon and krypton are the most common gases used. Low-e coating impedes the passage of UV rays, which reduces heat transfer. It also reduces sun damage to carpets, furniture and curtains.
  • Frames. Different types of frames have their advantages and disadvantages. In short, wood frames are the best insulators but the worst in terms of endurance. Aluminum frames hold up the best, but are highly conductive and will allow heat transfer. Vinyl frames are better insulators than aluminum but not as good as wood. Vinyl is also more durable than wood but not as strong as aluminum.
  • Style. When looking for replacements, remember that the style does not have to stay the same. Change from a portrait to a bay, or from a slider to a casement. Installing a new style can really change the look of the home.
