How Does a Window Installation Work?

How new windows are installed depends on the type of window being installed and how the home is constructed.

New Windows, New Home

New construction windows have an exterior fin that fits over the subsiding and directly attaches to the house frame. The finish siding or trim covers the top of the fin. This type of installation is the most straightforward.

Tackling Condensation on Windows and Doors

Condensation is a result of moisture in your home. It can appear on the inside or outside of your doors and windows when cold weather appears and the moist air in your home contacts the cooler surface of the windowpane. Depending on how cold it is, the condensation can appear as droplets of water, fogginess or even frost. The colder the temperature outside and the more humidity present inside, the more likely it is condensation will occur. If you are finding you have condensation forming on your doors and windows , there are a few ways you can tackle the issue.

If you do have ENERGY STAR® certified windows and doors and are still seeing condensation it could be due to a broken seal on the windows. This can occur for a number of reasons including damage to the glass as well as age. If this is the case, your windows require replacement.

The Importance of Winter Care for Your Doors & Windows

1. Keep windows closed

Keep the cold air in and the hot air out by keeping your windows closed. Choosing storm doors can be a daunting task when you start looking around and see how many models there are. Here are the basics of what they’re made of and their strengths.

Storm door frames

The most used materials for the frames of storm doors are aluminum, aluminum with a wood core, or wood wrapped in vinyl. Aluminum is used frequently as it is inexpensive, lightweight and strong. These make them easy to open as a heavy door can take more effort to open.

The two styles of wood core frames, aluminum and vinyl wrapped, are much more durable and heavy duty than plain aluminum. The added heft of the wood core adds greatly to its resistance to dents, becoming bent, warping and sagging over the years. The wood adds to the weight of the door, making it slightly more difficult to open.

Storm door glass

There are three types of glass in storm doors: standard glass, laminated glass and decorative.

A storm door with standard glass will actually have impact-resistant tempered glass. The advantage of this type of glass is that if it breaks it will shatter into small blunt pieces of glass. A much better alternative to big shards of sharp glass. This safety feature is great for family homes. It is also inexpensive.

Laminated glass has an extra level of security and safety by way of a layer of plastic pressed between two pieces of glass. It can withstand blows without breaking, and also have built in UV protection that blocks 99% of harmful UV rays.

Decorative glass is made from any type of glass that looks good. There are an abundance of styles and colours available to suit any design idea you have. Storm doors with complex decorative glass design tend to be more expensive, but can make for a great entrance door to the front of your home.

Three Signs Your Doors Need Replacing

Now that summertime is in full swing; you’re probably turning your attention to general home improvement projects like:

Doors , however, are projects that many people would like to do, but put off. If you do that though, you may be losing more money in energy than you think. Here are three signs your doors need replacing!

1. Light Comes Through the Doors

Do you see light through, under, between or around your doors? It isn’t good if you do. Where light is getting through, so is air. And when air is escaping through your doors , there is money being thrown away.

Even the smallest gap can allow a large amount of heat or cool air into and out of your home. Over the summer months, you’ll be throwing money out the door.

You could get away with adjusting your door or installing new weather stripping. But it may not solve the problem. At that point, you should consider replacing the door.

2. You Feel Hot or Cold Air When You Stand Next to Your Door

This goes for any exterior doors in your house. If it’s hot outside and you stand by your front door and instantly feel a rise in temperature, that’s bad.

There are two reasons why this could be happening:

Some doors, like wood , metal or steel doors, do not insulate as well as fibreglass doors .

For Sliding Doors

Sliding doors are well-known for being very energy-inefficient.

That’s because they usually don’t have weather stripping and have thin glass inserts (anything less than 5/8” is considered very thin).

If you’re trying to keep the house cool in the summer and stand by your sliding doors and immediately begin to sweat, then you need to look into getting them changed.

3. They Are Difficult to Open or Close

It’s annoying when your door doesn’t function as it’s supposed to. If you struggle to open or shut a door (to the point that you have to throw your shoulder into it), that’s not good at all.

The issue could be that the door was not properly installed to begin with. Or that the door could have shifted over time due to weather exposure.

It should be noted that wood and metal doors can expand and contract with temperature changes. In addition, rain and wet weather (like snow) can also warp or even rot your doors.

All this can lead to difficulty in opening and closing your doors – which can lead to problems with locking and securing them too.

For Sliding Doors

If sliding patio doors are tough to open or close, it could be because the rollers have gone bad or the track and frame have become damaged.

Sometimes the rollers can be replaced only. But in many cases, a sliding door replacement is needed.

Fiberglass Doors: Fact vs. Fiction

When it comes to fiberglass doors , there’s always misconceptions and misinformation regarding their performance and maintenance.

In this blog, we bust the myths regarding fiberglass doors and separate fact from fiction.

fiberglass doors are susceptible to warping

Any door – fiberglass or not – which does not have a good internal frame could possibly warp.

This is true from some fiberglass doors imported from Asia. Because they are built quickly and cheaply, they may not have the structure needed to prevent warping.

Solidly build fiberglass doors (like Therma-Tru) are made with a powerful LDL inner frame that will not allow the door to warp.

fiberglass doors are more expensive than steel doors

The Door Centre has partned with OSTACO Windoors to provide smooth-skinned fiberglass door systems.

In combination with Therma-Tru door panels, the resulting door can complete directly with steel insulated door systems in terms of price and durability.

This means that, in some instances, fiberglass doors are less expensive than their steel counterparts.

The World’s Biggest Doors

Doors come in all shapes and sizes.

But they usually have one function: to provide a gateway for people and things to enter or exit a building.

So for this blog post, we’re going to have some fun and look at the biggest, most massive doors, gates and other entryways in the world, where they’re located and what they’re used for.

NASA Assembly Building

Space shuttles are big, so it makes sense that they need to fit through big doors.

But doors that are 456 feet high? That’s amazing.

To put that in perspective, the doors are the same height as the world’s tallest roller coaster and are almost three times the height of Niagara Falls.

Another interesting fact is that the doors are so big, it takes 45 minutes to completely open and close them.

Fort Knox Vault Doors

Reportedly, Fort Knox is home to approximately 5000 tons of gold bullion. Which is worth around $175,083,200,000 (give or take a few dollars).

So having big, strong doors to protect that gold is pretty important.

One interesting fact is that, at Fort Knox, no single person knows the whole combination to open the vault doors.

That means you’ll need to find the employees or contractors who know a small piece of the combination and then try to piece it all together.

What does “Builders Grade” mean? Why should I care?

The term builder grade can make it sound as if you are getting a great building product. This makes sense, since infusing the word “builder” into the phrase makes it sound as if you are getting a building product that contractors would die for. However, the exact opposite is true. Not only is a builder grade quality product not the best out there, but this actually means that you are getting the lowest possible, acceptable quality building products. Any serious construction, replacement or repair project will not include anything of this quality.

What problems can builder grade materials cause?

Low quality materials can cause a long list of problems. Let’s take a look at how they can affect the functionality and durability of different parts of your home:

Windows

Your entryway door is another place where the outside air will try to infiltrate your home, causing your energy rates to skyrocket. In fact, between your windows and doors, you can be paying an additional 25% in heating and cooling costs if they are builder grade. In addition to this, builder grade doors are usually hollow; this means that whether they are your front door or your bedroom door, they are highly susceptible to warping and breaking.

Siding

Regardless of the climate that you live in, builder grade siding will break in no time. Here are a few of the weather conditions that it is highly susceptible to:

The damage often happens in several months to a few years, and manifests itself in the form of cracks, chipping, fading, peeling and falling off.

Builder grade products are usually mass-produced. In order to optimize these production methods, very few non-utilitarian design elements are included in builder grade products. A builder grade kitchen cabinet, for example, will be little more that a series of bland rectangles with doors on them.

Builder grade products exist because despite their low quality, they do work. A builder grade front door made from builder grade materials, for example, is capable of handling the stress of regular use despite its numerous drawbacks. As a result, they are often used in short-term or low-budget home enhancement projects. The three alternative categories, listed from lowest to highest quality, are quality grade, custom grade and ultra custom grade. Myths & Facts about Fiberglass Doors

Fact 1: Fiberglass doors that do not have a strong structural internal frame could warp.

Some doors on the market that are imported from Asia are susceptible to warping because they do not have a substantial inner frame system.

They are built cheaply to try and compete with the steel insulated door market.

Therma-Tru Fiberglass doors are built with a LDL inner frame approximately 3-1/2” in all four sides of the door thus providing a substantial structural frame that will not allow the door to warp.

Therma-Tru provides its dealers with a 25Year warranty against the door from warping.

Myth 2 : Fiberglass door are more expensive than steel doors.

Fact 2: The Door Centre provides the smooth skinned fiberglass door systems through our supplier OSTACO Windoors in Concord.

Ostaco build their door systems using Therma-Tru door panels exclusively and when combined with their patented vinyl extruded frame can compete directly with those who sell the steel insulated door systems.

In some cases, the fiberglass doors are less expensive.

Fact 3: Therma-Tru developed the fiberglass doors over 30 years ago.

It has proven to be more reliable than the steel doors.

There is no denting like the steel door. There is no rusting like the steel door.
