Window Replacement in Ancaster
Ancaster has been building houses for more than 200 years: stone buildings along Wilson Street, mid-century homes on big treed lots, and the newer streets of the Meadowlands. The Door Centre is a family-owned window and door company, founded in Burlington in 1981. We handle window replacement in Ancaster from measuring to cleanup.
Ancaster's homes, era by era
- Ancaster Village. The village grew up around James Wilson's mills in the early 1790s, and Wilson Street still has stone buildings from the 1820s and 1830s.
- Mid-century surveys. New subdivisions began going in around the village after 1946, small surveys followed along Mohawk Road, Highway 53 and Fiddler's Green in the 1950s, and Highway 403 arrived in 1968. Many of those houses are now 55 to 80 years old.
- The Meadowlands. Construction began in the mid-1980s, and the residential phases south of Golf Links Road filled in through the 1990s and 2000s. Many of these homes were built with builder-grade windows.
Is it time in the Meadowlands?
Our window comparison chart puts builder-grade windows at roughly 5 to 15 years of life. If your 1990s or early-2000s Meadowlands home still has its first set, it's well past that. Watch for fog between the panes, condensation on the inside of the glass, drafts and cranks that no longer pull the window tight.
Heritage homes in and around the village
None of the City of Hamilton's heritage conservation districts is in Ancaster, but a number of properties along Wilson Street and in the village are individually designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. If your home is designated, replacing the windows may need a heritage permit, so check with the City of Hamilton before you order. We work on heritage houses. We can supply the windows, install them, or both.
For an older look, choose SDL bars, wood interiors and a custom-matched exterior colour. Primed jambs up to 10" deep let new units sit neatly in thick stone walls.
Glass and styles for Escarpment winters
Ancaster sits at a natural break in the Niagara Escarpment, beside the Dundas Valley, and its winters are cold. Our FAQ recommends triple-pane glass (1 3/8") with LoE 366 and argon fill. Casement and awning windows seal tightly when closed, and larger homes can add picture, bay, bow, arched or shaped windows from Vinylbilt and Frank by Ostaco. See every style on our windows page.
Cost and timing
Replacing every window typically costs $15,000 to $30,000+, depending on how many windows you have, double- or triple-pane glass, and frame style. We measure first and put the quote in writing. A typical job takes 6 to 10 weeks from order to install. Ask us about current rebates & financing, including Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program.
